"I just don't like old skin": Jane Fonda's bizarre confession

Jane Fonda has made an unusual confession about her dating life, explaining why she would only date people of a certain age.

The Hollywood legend, 85, has been married three times throughout her life: first to director Roger Vadim from 1965 to 1973, then to activist Tom Hayden from 1973 to 1990, and finally to CNN founder Ted Turner from 1991 to 2001.

Fonda is currently single, but doesn't plan on staying that way.

Despite being open to finding love, the actress has a very specific criteria for potential suitors to meet before agreeing to a date.

On the Absolutely Not podcast, the Oscar winner initially suggested she was done with men for good, saying, “I’m done, I’m over, I’m [almost] 86 years old, even in the dark I wouldn’t want to be naked in front of anybody.”

But she then went on to confess that there’s still a chance she could fall for a man, but they would just have to be substantially younger.

“And here’s another thing, I’m ashamed to say this, if I were to take a lover, he’d have to be 20. Because I don’t like old skin,” said Fonda.

She continued, “And consequently, I don’t want to foist that on anybody else. I assume other people are like me, I just don’t like old skin.”

“I disapprove of 86-year-old men with 20-year-old women, so I’m not going to repeat it. I can ogle them, and I can’t pretend that I don’t get turned on if I see a certain kind of a person, but no, no, no, I don’t want to force that on anybody.”

Her confession has been criticised on social media, with some suggesting the star would be “cancelled” if it was a man that had said the same about young women.

“This is seriously weird,” tweeted one fan, while another said: “But an 85 year old man wanting to date a 20 year old woman is disgusting? Am I right?”

"Who picks a fight with a rock star?" Jimmy Barnes confronts on-road "bully"

Jimmy Barnes' wife Jane has ripped into a truck driver who "bullied" the couple on the road, with the driver attempting to "fight Jimmy on the roadside".

Jane Barnes said the incident occurred on Wednesday night in the south Sydney suburb of Botany Bay, when the couple had been driving home from a charity event.

In a furious thread on Twitter, Jane detailed the terrifying incident which resulted in the police being called.

Jane wrote, "(He) cut us off across our lane and swiped our mirror, wanted to fight Jimmy on the roadside."

"Trucks are like weapons, bullies behind the wheel a danger to us all," she wrote, alongside the hashtags #TOLL and #NOtobullies.

Jane then shared a photo of the truck drivers' side profile as he almost came to blows with the rockstar, as well as photos of the truck's license plate and the Barnes' car which shows the drivers' side wing mirror bent out of place.

Jane went on to say the truckie had shared his details with the couple and that NSW Police had been called over the altercation.

However, she said, officers "couldn't do much" if there were no injuries or damages.

Jane's post drew in a wave of attention, with one fan asking, "Who picks a fight with a rock star?"

Ms Barnes replied, "Shouldn't matter who it is. This guy was just a pig. Swearing, smug, ignorant, misogynist bully."

The musician continued her rant on Instagram, writing, "When you drive a truck you're in charge of a weapon. A bully at the wheel can kill people."

Many sent their sympathies to the couple, with some saying the tweet was "poignant" given the increase in accidents on Aussie roads.

Jane Fonda reveals which surgery she’s “not proud of”

Jane Fonda has opened up about her beauty procedures, admitting there is one she “is not proud” to have done.

The 84-year-old’s latest interview with Vogue saw her get candid about going under the knife, including her regrets about getting a facelift.

“I had a facelift and I stopped because I don’t want to look distorted. I’m not proud of the fact that I had [one],” Fonda said.

“Now, I don’t know if I had it to do over if I would do it. But I did it. I admit it, and then I just say, OK, you can get addicted. Don’t keep doing it. A lot of women, I don’t know, they’re addicted to it,” she said.

As for her skincare routine, Fonda revealed that face creams weren’t a big part at all.

“I don’t do a lot of facials,” she explained.

“I don’t spend a lot of money on face creams or anything like that, but I stay moisturised, I sleep, I move, I stay out of the sun, and I have good friends who make me laugh. Dangerous attractions and revolutionary sympathies: 5 Jane Austen facts revealed by music

1. Jane Austen played and sang

Jane Austen played the piano from the age of about ten. Her family inherited some of her books of sheet music, including hundreds of manuscripts in her hand as well as printed music.

Along with piano music, there are many songs in the collection, and judging by the music we have, she seems to have been a soprano. She could accompany herself, improvising the piano part if necessary.

Most of what we know directly about Austen’s musicianship relies on the memories of her niece Caroline, who was only 12 when Austen died. Uniquely among her younger relatives, it seems, Caroline actively shared both Austen’s literary and musical interests. Caroline remembers some of the songs Austen sang for her in her last years, and in January 1817, six months before her death, Austen wrote to Caroline, "The Piano Forte often talks of you; – in various keys, tunes & expressions I allow – but be it Lesson or Country dance, Sonata or Waltz, You are really its’ constant theme."

2. Musical women featured in 5 of Austen’s 6 novels

Catherine Morland in Northanger Abbey happily abandoned her music lessons at an early age, but there are female musical characters in the other five of Austen’s six completed novels.

In Sense and Sensibility Marianne Dashwood is the musical one, while her sister Elinor was “neither musical, nor affecting to be so”. Marianne’s music becomes a “nourishment of grief” for her when she is abandoned by Willoughby.

Another pair of sisters, Elizabeth and Mary Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, are both musicians. In their case, the contrast is between their attitudes to their music-making: Mary insists on playing a “long concerto” at an evening party, while Elizabeth “easy and unaffected, had been listened to with much more pleasure, though not playing half so well”.

In Mansfield Park, Fanny Price is not musical. Fanny has been brought to Mansfield Park as a young child to be brought up with her rich cousins, Maria and Julia, who are slightly older. Even at the age of ten, she can see that competing with her cousins for accomplishments will be futile, and she refuses to have lessons.

Emma Woodhouse doesn’t exactly compete with Jane Fairfax in the music stakes in Emma. Emma knows perfectly well that Jane is much the better musician, and coming to admit that to herself and others is one stage in her faltering journey to maturity.

And in Persuasion, Anne Elliot is a consummate musician but does not envy the more showy accomplishments of the Musgrove sisters who play the harp, while she is still on the old-fashioned pianoforte.

3. Austen’s musical men are deceitful

All sorts of women can be musical – or not – in Austen’s novels. It tells us something about each of them, but there’s nothing that the musical women have in common – they can be heroines, anti-heroines, dependant orphans, or spoilt rich young women. With the men, things are a bit different.

Who are the musical men – not just the ones who enjoy music, but those who have some musical skill? There are not many.

Willoughby, in Sense and Sensibility, sings duets with Marianne and copies out sheet music for her. In Emma, Frank Churchill sings duets with Emma and with Jane Fairfax at the Coles’ dinner party. What do these two gents have in common, apart from being musicians? They are unreliable and deceitful.

4. Austen heroes fall in love listening to musical women

In Georgian times, the main role of the true gentleman, as far as musicianship is concerned, was to be an appreciative listener. One mark of an Austen hero is listening with enjoyment and attention to the woman who has attracted his interest. More than once, this is the shortest route to falling in love.

Colonel Brandon, unlike the rest of the company, pays Marianne “only the compliment of attention” when she is playing the piano in Sense and Sensibility. Mr Darcy’s “dangerous” attraction to Elizabeth is enhanced by music, which gives him an occasion to observe “the fair performer’s countenance”. In Mansfield Park, poor Edmund Bertram is “a good deal in love” after listening to Mary Crawford playing the harp.

5. Austen’s music collection reveals sympathies with Revolutionary France

Although French music is not mentioned in the novels, Austen had several French songs in her collection, some of them overtly political.

The husband of Jane’s cousin Eliza was executed by the Revolutionary government in 1794, so one might expect royalist sympathies. However, the music in her collection provides an interesting new angle.

Within a few pages of one of the manuscript books, we find not only a Royalist ballad, and a song lamenting the suffering of Queen Marie Antoinette as she awaits her fate, but also the music and five verses of words of the Marseillaise, the revolutionary anthem.

She chose not to write about it in her novels, but Austen knew very well what was going on over the channel – as her music shows.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

“He’s not a cowboy, he’s an actor”: Jane Campion hits back at Sam Elliott

Director Jane Campion has called out actor Sam Elliott after he criticised her film The Power of the Dog.

Campion called Elliott “a little bit sexist” and a “b****” a week after he slammed her film for being filmed in New Zealand and its theme of repressed homosexuality, claiming she didn’t know anything about the American West.

The New Zealand director responded to Elliott’s criticism over the weekend while speaking at the Directors Guild of America awards in Los Angeles.

“I’m sorry, he was being a little bit of a B-I-T-C-H. I think he thinks of me as a woman or something lesser first.”

Elliott initially shared his views during an interview on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast several weeks ago, when asked what he thought about the movie.

“They made it look like those dancers, those guys in New York who wear bow ties and not much else,” he said.
“That’s what all these f***ing cowboys in the movie look like. They’re all running around in chaps and no shirts. There’s all these allusions to homosexuality throughout the movie.”

When Maron responded with, “I think that’s what the movie’s about”, referencing how it’s heavily implied Benedict Cumberbatch’s character is a repressed gay man, Elliott claimed Campion was out of her depth making a Western.

“She’s a brilliant director, by the way, I love her … previous work - but what the f*** does this woman from down there, New Zealand, know about the American West?” Elliott said.

“And why in the f*** does she shoot this movie in New Zealand and call it Montana and say, ‘This is the way it was’. That f***ing rubbed me the wrong way pal.

“The myth is that they were these macho men out there with the cattle. I just come from f***ing Texas where I was hanging out with families, not men, families, big, long, extended, multiple-generation families.”

The Power of the Dog, a Western psychological drama, has been nominated for 12 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, which has made Campion the first woman to be nominated for best director twice.

Image: Getty Images

Netflix says it plans to load more episodes as they’re available.

Many of us have enjoyed this Emmy-nominated series and this is majorly due to the great work from the actors Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Netflix announced last year that the seventh season will be the last of the series but it still makes the show the longest-running original Netflix series to date.

The first season of Grace and Frankie premiered in May 2015 and all the previous six seasons of the hit show are now streaming on Netflix.

With the addition of this seventh season, which will end up consisting of 16 episodes, the show will have run for 94 episodes – a large number and this is what makes the show is Netflix’s longest-running original series to date.

The star power of Grace and Frankie

Grace and Frankie has always had all the components needed to keep us glued to our screens whenever we watch it. This leaves the women to live their own life and although they’re very different, they find they bond through this experience.

The series was created by Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris and airs on Netflix. As Kauffman and Morris have said: “It’s thrilling and somehow fitting, that our show about the challenges, as well as the beauty and dignity of aging, will be the oldest show on Netflix.”

Images and Video: YouTube

Jimmy and Jane Barnes mark 40th wedding anniversary in unusual fashion

Jimmy Barnes and his wife Jane are set to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on May 22nd in an unusual way.

The couple is set to launch their long-awaited family cookbook filled with delightful family feasts and their secret classics.

Jimmy and his wife Jane have amassed more than 100 million views with their at-home performances, with the rock husband revealing that Mrs Barnes had been smashing it despite only just beginning guitar, piano, and the bagpipes.

Their book together will be released by Harper Collins in October.

“Jane’s a great cook, this is what she does. And she loves it. I’m a good cook but I get flustered,” Barnes said.

“It’s funny me and Jane in the kitchen together because she’s calm and really enjoying it and I’m sending bits of food flying everywhere and breaking out in a sweat.

“I’m a good finisher, I’ll come in, clean up and serve it up. And I’m the gravy king.”

“When we get home after working, cheese toasties are all I think about and Jane does the best cheese toasties, she makes them with love. And it just tastes better because of that,” Barnes said.

“The great thing about us doing this cookbook is the recipes have nurtured our family and helped them to grow and get through the good times and the tough times.

“We didn’t go for anything too tricky or things we thought we had to do; it’s the food that us fed our family.”

The cookbook isn’t the only project the Barnes’ family has in the works though, with the creative Rockstar revealing he will also release his second children’s book.

Rosie the Rhinoceros is inspired by Rosie Rodgers, who is the youngest daughter of Mahlia Barnes and tells her grandpa she is a unicorn.

Rosie The Rhinoceros follows his first children’s book Och Aye The G’nu, which was inspired by his grandson Dylan.

“She laughed a bit when I told her the story and then I’ve kept reading it to her at different points when it was edited; she thought the cover was cute,” Barnes says.

“I can’t wait to sit with the finished book so I can sit down with her as she thumbs through the pictures and I’m sure she’ll love it, she loves to read.”

Barnes credits his wife for giving him the passion to read, going all the way back to their first date.

He recalled that the pair was swapping their “favourite” books as you do, and Jane nominated Shakespeare.

Barnes had left school as soon as he could at 16 to join the rock’n’roll circus so had never learnt of the great playwright.

“So she brought me Shakespeare for Children to introduce me to his work and they were such fantastic stories. And then I read the ‘real’ Shakespeare,” Barnes said.

“It was her way of introducing me to one of her favourite writers and it just blew my mind when I read Shakespeare. I remember I wrote six songs in a week after I started reading his works. It’s gone full circle now and now I’m reading the Shakespeare for Children books to the kids.

“Jane was always dropping classic books in front of me, suggesting I read them, and I would just soak them up. And she did the same with food, with culture, with travel.”

Rosie The Rhinoceros will be released by Harper Collins on September 29.

Image: Instagram

Is the dress green or red? Planet-friendly couture won’t be for everyone but it can lead the way

Hollywood legend Jane Fonda hit the 92nd Academy Awards ceremony stage this week in a beaded red dress by Elie Saab – a gown she had previously worn at Cannes in 2014.

Rising star Kaitlyn Dever walked the Oscars red carpet in a deep scarlet Louis Vuitton dress she told reporters was “completely sustainable” thanks to fibre technology.

Two very different fashion approaches towards saving the planet – but how effective are they at mitigating the environmental impact of fashion? The first comes from an activist trying to be more sustainable, the second from a designer label making production changes.

Size of the problem

The fashion industry creates in excess of 80 billion pieces of clothing a year and is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions.

Chemical dyes in fashion create 20% of global waste water and crops such as cotton use 24% of global insecticides.

Microfibers and micro plastics from laundered garments have contaminated our beaches, bottled drinking water, and aquatic food chain.

Fast fashion promotes the reckless over-production and over-consumption of cheaply made clothing, and is reliant on exploiting inexpensive labour.

Less than 1% of fabrics can be recycled and fibre-to-fibre recycling technology is still in its infancy, without the infrastructure to address the vast amount of garments produced.

A ‘completely sustainable’ dress?

Dever’s dress was made from a material called “Tencel Luxe”, with lyocell fibre created from sustainably-grown trees. The wood is cut into tiny pieces, dissolved in a solvent and extruded into a soft cellulose fibre.

This process was first developed in 1972 to create a cheap cotton substitute, often blended into cotton and polyester in inexpensive fabrics. Over time, lyocell improved to make a fabric more appropriate for luxury products.

The sustainability of the fabric has also improved significantly. Today, 99% of the solvent used in the manufacturing process is recyclable. The fabric itself has the same challenges as cotton when it comes to recycling. The length of the fibres break down and shortens over time, lowering the quality when recycled into new fabrics – unless virgin material is added.

Indeed, lyocell fabric is far from perfect, and requires a large amount of energy in its production. Just substituting one material for another does not solve sustainability problems.

Dever’s dress was made over 1,900 hours by a team of artisans with 14,400 Swarovski crystals and glass beads. A gown this opulent uses so much material, energy and labour that its carbon footprint becomes excessive.

The sustainability measure of a garment must include how it is recycled after its life. At present, some cutting edge fibre-to-fibre recycling technologies exist but Louis Vuitton is yet to offer recycling services.

The Louis Vuitton group hosts the Viva Tech Conference for exhibitors working on sustainable concepts to showcase their developments. It is encouraging that the company’s chairman and chief executive Bernard Arnault believes“sustainable, globalised growth is possible” and a priority for the company.

A second outing

With her commitment to climate change activism, Fonda has said she will no longer buy new clothing.

In a world that demands novelty, Fonda’s bold act of choosing an old gown that tastefully fits into today’s trends truly brings “vintage” clothing to the red carpet.

Fonda used her celebrity influence to turn a dress on the red carpet into a political symbol.

Her vow not to buy new clothing was inspired by teenage activist Greta Thunberg, who Fonda said showed that we can’t just “go about our business” in the face of a climate emergency.

No stranger to being arrested, Fonda’s real world activism is the type needed to change government policies in ways that reign in the fashion industry.

Activists can petition governments, watch over corporations and form grassroots community groups to organise change. Celebrities who straddle the red carpet and the picket line such as Jane Fonda (or Emma Thompson for Extinction Rebellion) are key to a sustainable fashion industry.

Think before you shop

It is inspiring to see these two stars’ dresses become talking points.

It shows the public’s growing awareness of climate change and their willingness to change their behaviour to make a difference. The fashion industry will determine significant aspects of the future of our environment and the lives of over 40 million workers around the world.

From developing new green technology to changing consumer consumption behaviour and outlawing exploitative labour practices that make fast fashion possible, we are still a long way from a “completely sustainable” industry.

Corporations will need to evolve and adapt to customers who demand sustainability. They will have to offer services that recycle garments after they have been used, and embrace recycled materials. Celebrities bring these issues to the public and give them steps they can take right now.

When asked by a reporter about what people could do right now to be more sustainable, Dever said, “it’s just a matter of letting it be a part of your lifestyle”.

With fashion, I think you can think a little before you buy something brand new, and I think can also support vintage – I think that’s really, really important. And also look into the brands you’re supporting.

This is a great starting point which hopefully continues into a deeper conversation about how far we yet have to go.

Written by Mark Liu.
